The project manager is the prime project leader of initiating projects in companies which cost millions to implement. Most project managers undergo project manager certification and obtain PMP certification training for credibility in undertaking the project management practice.
In the long run, project managers can choose to obtain project manager certification and undergo PMP training after gaining years of experience or they can opt not to take it at all. Even though some consider this as important, it isn’t always the case. In project management, what’s important is having an excellent project manager.
To be effective in this role, one must have a foresight into the desired outcome of a project. A good project manager is someone who knows how to lead the project team into sharing a common vision for a particular project.
Another important trait of a project manager is having exceptional communication skills. He must be able to communicate things clearly both at the micro and macro level as he will be the key person that everyone in a project goes to when something goes wrong.
A project manager is also someone who knows how to divide the tasks between and amongst his team members. He must trust that his team will do the right thing. In managing small or large scale projects, the project leader who does not know how to do this can easily suffer from burn out.
In project management, many things can easily go wrong such as cuts on the project budget, team members not meeting assigned deadlines, or deals that do not push through, and the project manager bears all of these things. An effective project manager is usually one who maintains his composure when things go wrong. He knows how to bring the team back on the right track.
In the end, it doesn’t really matter if you have a project manager certification or not, what matters is that you learn to have the skills and the values needed to implement a project.
